Description

Banaba is a medicinal plant that grows in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia and Taiwan.

Most of the current research on Banaba has been done in the Philippines. Recent studies show that Banaba can be used in the treatment of diabetes and as an ingredient in weight loss products.

Use

Diabetes: corosolic acid is a triterpenoid glucoside which is believed to facilitate the transport of glucose to cells. It is attributed to the property of lowering blood sugar.

Weight loss: it is a common ingredient in food supplements for weight loss and in products that accelerate the metabolism.

Traditional uses include tea infusions of the leaves of this plant for the treatment of diabetes and hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar concentrations). The hypoglycaemic effect (low blood sugar concentrations) of Banaba leaf extract is similar to that of insulin, which promotes the transport of glucose from the blood to individual cells.
