Description

Borage seed oil (or borage oil) is obtained from the seeds of Borago officinalis, an edible plant, a spontaneous species, native to the Mediterranean area, which is now grown in various parts of the world for its use as a vegetable and for the ‘oil extraction. It is one of the vegetable oils with the highest concentration of ?-linolenic acid, a relatively rare omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid in the plant world, whose role as a precursor of eicosanoids in human metabolism is known.

Benefits

Refined borage seed oil has been included in some pharmacopoeias and its oral administration has been proposed to treat or prevent various diseases, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, atopic dermatitis, diabetic neuropathy and symptoms related to menopause. It has been shown to decrease inflammation and improve bone health and has beneficial effects on various skin functions and the regulation of lipid metabolism.
