Description

Hawthorn, botanical name Crataegus Oxyacantha, grows like a thorny shrub with white and pink flowers and berries in Europe, western Asia, North America and North Africa. The modern medicinal parts are leaves and flowers, while traditional preparations use fruit. The main active ingredient of Hawthorn are Flavonoids, including Procianidine Oligomeriche (OPC), Vitexina, Vitexina 4′-O-ramnoside, quercitina, and iperoside. These Flavonoids act as powerful antioxidants.

Hawthorn has a fundamental role in supporting cardiovascular health. This includes an improvement in coronary artery flow and therefore the supply of oxygen to the heart, contractions of the heart muscle, stable angina and congestive heart failure phase II.

It has also been noted that hawthorn increases peripheral blood flow, decreasing the resistance of peripheral blood vessels. Hawthorn has been shown to improve the elasticity of the arterial walls, thanks to the maintenance of the collagen matrix.
