Opuntia ficus-indica – commonly known as prickly pear, it grows in all mild areas, withstands cold temperatures and can even reach 5 m in height, forming large trunks with branches that can be up to 50 cm long. The flowers are yellow and the edible fruits are orange, white and yellow.

The fleshy “leaves” of the plant are used for feeding cattle in general and also for pigs (Mexico, Africa, Australia, Brazil), while the fruit, very rich in vitamin C, is consumed as a delicacy, transformed into jam, syrup and also in alcoholic beverages.
